Community-based Disaster Risk Reduction

Disasters result to physical, social and economic destruction of communities that cause serious economic impact on communities, and households.

The acceleration of changing weather patterns due to global climate change aggravate further the underlying risk that many poor and developing countries are facing.

Poor households and poor nations throughout the world face two disadvantages: the inability to generate income and the vulnerability to physical social and economic downturns.

The Geographical and physical characteristics of the Philippines make it one of the world’s most disaster prone-country.

This program aims to strengthen and develop people’s capacity especially the most vulnerable sectors to prepare and respond to emerging emergencies and disasters and reduce their vulnerabilities.

The programs project development and implementation framework is based on the following:

Inclusive and Participatory: Working directly with the most vulnerable and at risk, especially those who are marginalized utilizing the methodologies of participatory action research and learning. This process involves the local government units, people’s organizations and household heads in conducting vulnerability assessment, formation and strengthening of their local DRR committee and contingency planning.

Multi-stakeholder Partnership that involves engagement with national and  local government units, national and local civil society organizations and other government agencies and non-government organizations.

Mainstreaming of Disaster Risk Reduction in Education in formal, non-formal and informal learning environment to foster critical thinking and facilitate a reflective learning environment for the development of values and perspectives for sustainability.
